Healthy Eating During the Holidays

The holidays are a time for parties, family, travel, and gift-giving. Unfortunately, they are also a time for frenzied shopping, stress, and over-indulgence in food and drink.

In her last blog, Revolution Training Center’s Lead Psychologist, Dr. Kristina Pecora makes the argument that the holidays are the BEST time for sticking to healthy goals, and I agree! Treating your body to great nutrition is a gift in itself, so focus on making one small nutrition change per week. Here are some tips to get you started:

  1. If you look forward to a dessert, entrée, or appetizer that’s only served during the holiday season, don’t deprive yourself! The trick is to stick to ONE serving. Indulge, but don’t overindulge.
  2. Budget your calories! Apply the same concept of setting a monetary budget to Christmas shopping to your eating habits. Want to enjoy a cocktail at a party? Save some calories by skipping desesrt. Apply the 200-300 saved calories to “spend” on a cocktail.
  3. Make sure to provide yourself with at least one healthy option at parties by bringing it yourself. Bringing a brightly colored fresh vegetable salad or tray with hummus to a cocktail or dinner party.
  4. Follow the plate method: mentally split your plate into quarters, and fill ¼ with lean protein such as poultry or hummus, ¼ with whole grain such as whole grain pita chips, and pile the rest with fruit & veggies.

If you need more help with lightening up on calories, our Registered Dietitians can help you to navigate the holiday season. Keep in mind: great nutrition is a gift in itself.
